Application Support Engineer I

The candidate will be part of a team that maintains Consumer Systems application services 24x7x365 where the standard is that sites download fast and are always available for a network of over 110 major media brand websites and associated systems.  Primary responsibilities include the ability to analyze complex technical issues and then implement the solution, as well as a strong desire to continually learn new technology, implement it and keep it running.
Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions
• Provide quality service in interacting with clients to support their issues & questions in relation to the company’s operational application systems.
• Diagnose and resolve moderate to complex technical problems across multiple infrastructures, network and database environments while coordinating troubleshooting efforts with one or more vendor support organizations.
• Issue resolution and/or root cause analysis of operational issues.
• Participation in a periodic on-call rotation roster.
• Manage & update appropriate documentation including checklists, runbooks, wikis. 
• Designs and codes small applications to support infrastructure (customer monitoring scripts, system administration automation, admin scripts).
• Troubleshoots networking, application, and operating system problems.
• Respond to alerts or problems by following appropriate incident & problem management procedures. 
• Works with other teams to assist in the implementation of moderate to complex system software changes.
• Prepares system change management plans, writes technical documentation and procedures.
• Other duties as assigned.


• At least 5 years of experience in a web hosting environment preferred.
• Experience in a web based Content Management System (CMS) environment
• A working knowledge of HTML / XML
• A working knowledge of CSS, Javascript
• Familiarity with networking / DNS concepts
• Knowledge of NewRelic  / other monitoring utilities
• Linux administration, Apache implementation, tuning and customization a plus
• Knowledge of software development lifecycle
• Experience with Wordpress a plus
• Familiarity with supporting database, application & web servers in a high-availability high-performance clustered environment.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in a fast-paced environment.
• Requires direct interaction with customers to resolve end-user problems and complaints.
• Collaborating with software engineers, DBAs, and nontechnical teams.
• Candidate is required to have a high aptitude for explaining complex concepts in layman’s terms.
• Knowledge of Jira / ServiceNow a plus
• Documentation / Tech writer experience a plus.
