POSITION SUMMARY:

Cox Media Group is seeking a bilingual seasoned, aggressive reporter to cover politics, breaking news, and information related to the Hispanic audience in the United States.

The candidate should have experience covering a major beat (metropolitan area) and have sufficient reporting muscle to be able to write deep enterprise as well as breaking news and produce/edit videos.  This reporter will work closely with a reporting and digital team, developing and executing strong story ideas and coverage. Must be comfortable shooting and producing video along with being on camera; particularly Facebook live but not limited to it.



JOB DUTIES & TASKS:
  • Provide high-quality, unique and impactful in-depth stories for digital publication by independently examining records from institutions and individuals.
  • The senior reporter must have the highest quality of research skills, able to ferret out information where others cannot.
  • He or she must be expert at devising an investigative methodology for each story that breaks news and connects the story to the Hispanic audience. 
  • He or she must be highly skilled at research and source development.
  • He or she must be capable of excellent investigative work in three levels: short-term investigation off the news, longer-term enterprise and project-level work designed to create impact.
  • He or she must be capable of the highest quality of storytelling, mixing narrative elements and an authoritative voice to create must-read content that drives impact.
  • The essential differentiation between a senior investigative reporter and all other investigative reporters is the ability to work without assignments, to develop high-quality ideas and approaches to the most difficult stories and turn those stories efficiently and effectively into engaging content.
  • Report and write with a strong sense of urgency, energy, tenacity and strong editorial judgement.
  • Demonstrates ability to break exclusive stories.
  • Demonstrates strong judgment and clear ability to develop reader-focused and high-impact story ideas.
  • Show clear understanding and ability to execute enterprise stories, using records and databases as well as burning shoe leather and building a superior source list.
  • Writes clearly with sophistication, absolute accuracy and balance, all while doing it on deadline and in a variety of technology tools and social media platforms.
  • Displays depth as a reporter and capability of devising reporting methods to get at the difficult stories.
  • Has ability to juggle priorities and assignments to produce both short-term and project-level work.
  • Collaborates effectively with others and is adept at sharing investigative skills.
  • Uses time effectively, meeting deadlines and producing an acceptable volume of work. 
  • Consistently meets deadlines set for digital needs, including advance deadlines.
  • Shows capacity quickly gain sufficient knowledge to jump on an unknown topic and produce stories.
  • Produce smartphone photos and videos and collect data and other information for maps, charts and other supplemental content.
  • Digital skills are a growing part of this job. And needs to be comfortable in a public setting, making public appearances.
  • Generates work that is balanced, fair, accurate and complete, incorporating, where appropriate, a diverse range of sources.
  • Copy and video should not contain errors of fact of judgment and should not include any issue of bias.
  • Handles other assignments as needed, showing flexibility and adaptability.
  • Engages editors on best ways to present stories on digital platforms.
  • Understand Federal and local laws and government, the democratic process, the political arena and how laws affect the Hispanic audience.
  • Have a clear understanding of libel law and able to recognize and flag potential legal issues that could expose Mundo Hispanico to litigation over libel, invasion of privacy, copyright or other issues.


Qualifications

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree preferred
EXPERIENCE:
  • 5 to 7 years or more of reporting experience preferred, minimum of 5 years.
  • Demonstrated strong news judgment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Seasoned bilingual (Spanish/English) video journalist with a minimum of 5 years of experience covering politics in Washington D.C. for the Hispanic audience in the US.
  • Comes with contacts and sources in the local political field, the Hill, federal agencies and the White House.
  • Strong knowledge of how politics affect Hispanics in the United States.
  • With experience producing and editing videos using Premier or similar editing software. 
  • With active presence on social media (particularly in Twitter, Facebook, lnstagram, Pinterest, Reddit, Vine, Google+, WhatsApp. Candidates may be asked to supply handles for verification.) and ability to be on camera via Facebook live when needed.
  • Ability to create content to meet audience needs for digital platforms.
  • Strong ability to organize, analyze, interpret and disseminate information.
  • Able to handle breaking news and work under pressure on a fast news environment and deadlines.
  • Flexibility in shift starting times and in work location.
  • Have reliable transportation, or access to reliable transportation.
  • Willing to travel as needed
  • Flexibility to work remotely
