NBC recently launched a new digital-first team of reporters, filmmakers, animators, tinkerers and video journalists tasked with rethinking what video news and features could and should look like in 2017.

NBC Left Field is an independent, off-site division of NBC News aimed at experimenting with emerging technologies and developing a sleek video news offering in new and rapidly growing spaces on mobiles and broader social spaces.

Our aim is to push boundaries in video by toying with technology, thinking about data, employing smart design and challenging what an American broadcaster should look like in the 21st Century.

We’ve been developing and toying with video features and social video for the past few months. But we are now about to launch several series and are looking for a highly ambitious leader in design, animation and social growth—someone who understands the thread between those areas.

We want someone who can identify the viral bits buried within our larger stories, pull them out and dress them up in an easily digestible way for social—from text-on-video to repurposing them into GIFs and graphics. This individual will then be expected to collect data related to their creations and modify their designs based on their findings.

This designer will also be crafting a system for our video journalists for filing content that helps meet social growth needs, ie filing varying types of edits for Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

We are all very design-centric creators, and this person should have a large interest in digital art and pushing the envelope stylistically. The candidate should be a free thinker who loves to experiment and reinvent in fast-paced environments while designing video products.

We are building these products from the ground up, and you’ll be responsible for helping us design the look and aesthetics as we go.

You should have experience in journalism in some capacity and have experience working on tight deadlines and quick turnarounds using a studio or merely the tools at your desk. You should be overflowing with ideas for gripping and easily shareable videos about the day’s news.


Basic Qualifications

+ 3+ years professional experience

+ Demonstrated knowledge and prior experience in Adobe Premiere

+ Demonstrated knowledge and prior experience in Adobe After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator

+ Demonstrated knowledge and prior experience in CMS

+ Demonstrated knowledge and prior experience crafting for social mediaAdditional Job Requirements
