SUMMARY: Provides support to Technical Services – Horticulture, Ride and Show, and Facilities Maintenance departments, as well as other divisions across UO, with all aspects and requirements for tree maintenance, removal and relocation.


+ Operate all heavy equipment, being adept in the use of a bucket truck and high reach to prune, move, install, and remove trees. Being proficient in the operation and maintenance of all 2-cycle equipment i.e.: Chain saws, power pole saws, and back-pack or hand held blowers.

+ Climb trees for proper maintenance and removal, within UO climbing and rigging guidelines. Including the ability to perform specific climbing knots i.e.: Bowline hitch, half hitch, double half hitch, and slip knot.

+ Rigging trees for proper lifting and transport. Being capable of applying the essential techniques used for tree lifting i.e.: Choke strapping, barrel strapping, saddle strapping, and pinning.

+ Provide correct hand signals for heavy equipment operation and rental cranes to insure safe operation.

+ Stakes and guys trees according to UO Horticulture standards.

+ Identification of proper tree nutrition and/or deficiencies.

+ Understand and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.

+ Perform other duties as assigned.

SCOPE: Responsible for maintaining the integrity of all trees and palms resort wide.

+ High school degree or GED is preferred.


+ 3-5 years in arboriculture settings; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


+ Class B CDL required; ISA Arborist Certification preferred; MOT (Method of Traffic) certification from DOT preferred.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This job requires extensive physical job duties and the ability to climb and trim trees at long intervals. In addition to the use of specific knot tying, strategic climbing, and the use of power tools while in the trees and on the ground. Must have the ability to operate and work out of a bucket truck and high reach at heights up to 50 feet.


While performing the duties of this job, the individual is required to:

+ Regularly (2/3 of the time or more) stand for prolonged periods of time; talk; use hands and fingers to grip, pinch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; work at heights for prolonged periods of time, including heights with or without railings or over open pits greater than 4 feet; balance; reach pull, push with hands, and arms above and below head; use close vision with or without corrective lens (clear vision at 20 inches or less); use distance vision with or without corrective lens (clear vision at 20 feet or more); use color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); use peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point); use depth perception, have the ability to adjust focus (e.g., to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus while in changing light conditions, such as sunshine to indoor or dark conditions); work in varied light conditions including low or diminished lighting; maintain alertness and attentiveness up to 4 hours while working varying hours; maintain concentration/focus (e.g., ability to interpret the work environment and make decisions on predetermined operating policies and procedure); taste and smell.

+ Frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time) hear audible alarms; voice commands with background noise; climb ladders and stairs, stoop, kneel, crawl, or crouch; lift and push up to fifty pounds with control.

+ Occasionally (1/3 of the time or less) walk for prolonged periods (including ability to walk at a given pace that is predetermined by a moving sidewalk); sit for prolonged periods of time; climb ladders and stairs; stoop, kneel, crawl, or crouch; work in an environment subject to vibrations; work in an environment with flashing lights, including strobe lamps; and work in small or tight spaces.


While performing the duties of this job, the individual is required to:

+ Regularly (2/3 of the time or more) work in wet, humid conditions (non-weather); work in outdoor weather conditions, including direct sunlight; work in extreme cold (non-weather); work in extreme heat (non-weather); use an extendable boom forklift (lull); use a high reach (Aerial lift), use a backhoe/frontend loader (earth moving equipment); use a motorized company vehicle or a leased personal vehicle for company business.

+ Frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time) be exposed to loud noise (noise when raised conversation is needed).

+ Occasionally (1/3 of the time or less) work with cranes, use a forklift (sit down); excavate more than four feet; work with oils/fuels, be exposed to bodily fluids; transport fuels or compressed gases.
