Manager, Software Development

Location Austin, Texas Job Number 1714390 Brand Fans 1st Media

Description

Cox Media Group has a small Innovation Team in Austin, Texas working on next-generation media ideas. Our team has expanded to create a new design & technology group focused on Clark.com, Rare.us, RareCountry.com, and other digital media brands, and we are looking for a web development manager to join our team.

Your job is to create an environment and team that delivers outstanding software as fast as possible while having fun. We write good code we can be proud of, but we prioritize our end-users, product owners, and designers.

In addition to other assigned duties, our web development manager has three primary areas of responsibility.

1. Developing a team of direct reports

You’re responsible for a great group of developers and making them greater. You’ll evaluate and coach developers to continually improve their performance as both technologists and employees. You’ll interview and hire fantastically talented folks. Clear obstacles. Supply resources. Mentor. Train. Build trust.

You’re also a developer’s career advocate: knowing where they want to go and taking the appropriate steps to set them up for success.

2. Leading a cross-functional delivery team

As a development manager, you’ll be accountable for the success of projects assigned to your team. Each project will have a cross-team, cross-functional group of folks assigned to it. To get great results, you'll need to build relationships and work cooperatively with folks who may or may not report to you.

Your delivery team works closely with a project manager and customer to define the most valuable work and to break it apart into appropriately sized chunks to be delivered. You’re accountable for the project's quality, timely delivery, and overall success. You’re also the team’s advocate within the company, getting them everything they need to be successful.

3. Execute as an individual contributor

Although managing your team is the most important part of your job, you will be expected to stay grounded by contributing code approximately 15 hours each week. This will allow you to understand what works well for your team and what doesn't: What slows them down? What frustrates their productivity and hinders their happiness at work? Having first-hand experience with the work your team does is vital to the important work you'll do to support and advocate for them.

Skills and qualifications:

• Command of either front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) or server-side technologies (PHP, Python, JavaScript), or any combination thereof. (You should have some code to show us, or be ready to do a code challenge.)
• Words that best describe you: energetic, adaptable, a leader, trusting, results driven, inspirational, quality focused, strategic thinker, coach, customer focused, organized
• You’re committed to the craft of managing and leading people.
• You’re able to make the complex simple and have demonstrated an ability to understand and explain issues from both a technical and a business functional point of view.
• You effortlessly switch between big picture thinking and nit-picking detail.
• You solve problems with the right mix of creativity and deep analysis.
• You’re passionate about communication, group dynamics and coaching.
• You have an insatiable appetite for learning new things and improving existing ones. You cultivate that same appetite in your developers and teams.
• You’re a perfectionist who tempers it with deadlines. Pragmatism is your middle name, you work at speed and inspire with your can-do attitude.
• You pay attention to details and take great pride in your work.
• You proactively identify project, people and organizational problems and provide well-thought-out solutions to them.
• You’re comfortable with setting your own direction and agenda to achieve broad goals assigned to you.
• You have an understanding and appreciation for the open source ecosystem and community.
• You’re able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
