Job Description

KCCI-TV, the Hearst Television station in Des Moines, Iowa, is looking for a multi-media journalist with strong visual story-telling skills both as a reporter and photographer. We’re looking for a reporter who can generate lead story ideas and do compelling live shots.  Our award-winning photographer staff values creativity and outstanding story-telling skills.  KCCI is a multi-year winner of the National Press Photographers Association Station of the Year award.  This position will require someone who can some days shoot and report their own stories, periodically shoot for other reporters, and some days report with a photographer.  Come see why Iowa’s News Leader is an excellent next step in your career, working in a growing city with a sound economy.  Des Moines is at the top of many lists as a great place for young professionals and is home to the Iowa caucuses, which starts the presidential selection process every four year.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Come to work each day with enterprise story ideas
  • Be able to write well, and write to video exceptionally well
  • Have an energetic and professional delivery on air – with the ability to produce engaging, active live shots
  • Shoot strong news video in a live and breaking news environment
  • Editing news video on non-linear software
  • Setting up and managing live shots both with microwave live vans and bonded cellular technology
  • Be able to quickly send back text, images and video by cellphone so we can get breaking news online quickly
  • Work quickly and other deadline pressure
  • Work as a solo reporter or with another photographer to turn news stories

Required Skills

  • Strong on-air skills – and a demo reel that demonstrates it
  • Ability to shoot news video that is properly lit, composed and steady – and a demo reel that proves it
  • Non-linear editing skills
  • Ability to shoot the stories you’ll be reporting on
  • A valid driver’s license and a clear driving record
  • Physical ability to carry cameras, tripods and other photography equipment as needed

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field preferred
