**Responsibilities**

Job Purpose

The Senior DevOps Architect will be responsible for providing top-layer sustainability of News Technology systems and hands on technology design and implementations while working closely with various support teams across all systems and services. Role requires an in-depth understanding of technologies including DevOps, deployment automation and management, and infrastructure deployment in bare metal, virtualized, and cloud contexts.



Responsibilities

The NBC News Technology and Engineering division is responsible for systems and processes supporting Newsgathering operations and production for our global brands. With central operations located in New York, areas of involvement and collaboration span across our various locations and facilities including Washington DC, London, Miami, and Los Angeles. The team is focused on the supporting newsgathering, special events and day-to-day production including technical design and workflow planning.



Job Activities



+ Design and implement new virtual and cloud-based infrastructures to improve the scalability and fault tolerance of the application ecosystem

+ Define and implement automated deployment processes to support infrastructure and application changes

+ Work with stakeholders from the development teams and the business to help support a dev-ops mindset across stakeholder groups

+ Recommend infrastructure solutions based on changing stakeholder requirements

+ Provide infrastructure support for news production systems in a 24/7/365 live television production environment for systems serving thousands of clients across multiple NBC News brands

+ Serve as on-call escalation resource for support teams, involving on-site coverage during normal business hours as well as on-call support before/after normal working hours

+ Perform system-level troubleshooting of technical software and hardware

+ Perform systems software installation and updates

+ Track issues, resolutions, communicating with both engineering management and operational, and production clients

+ Interface with vendors/manufacturers to address issues, feature requests and changes

+ Work closely with various vendors to assess new products, perform research and development, and proof-of-concepts

+ Implement standards, controls, processes and technologies that ensure a high degree of security, availability and reliability for the 24/7 production system environments, including performance of preventative maintenance on all supported systems

+ Document processes and monitor systems. Investigate root causes for incidents, recommend and implement solutions

+ Promote best practices

+ Create and manage system change control processes

+ Identify and plan for operational risks relative to production requirements over short, medium, and long term projects

+ Develop documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences

+ Perform other duties as assigned

**Qualifications/Requirements**

Qualifications/Requirements

Candidate must have 10+ years of systems management experience with proven expertise in managing large scale, high visibility virtualized and cloud infrastructures.



+ Prior experience managing scalable, fault tolerant server infrastructures using VMWare

+ Prior experience migrating large scale, preferably consumer-facing environments from physical servers to virtual and cloud-based solutions

+ Experience implementing and managing large (multi-petabyte) tiered storage systems

+ Experience automating manual application and infrastructure support and deployment tasks using tools such as Jenkins, RunDeck, and Puppet

+ Familiar with networking design and principles

+ Familiar with security standards and implementing technologies such as IPSEC, PKI, etc.

+ Must be willing to work on-site in New York, NY

+ An Associate Degree in a relevant technical discipline, or certificate from an accredited technical training institution, or equivalent experience

+ Computing and network systems, standards, applications and methodologies

+ Program/Project Management - Ability to communicate complicated technical issues in a straightforward and concise manner

+ Experience working with IT systems and web technologies, with a solid understanding of network protocols, standards, and fundamentals (e.g. DNS, TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP, SSH, VLANS, LDAP, etc.)

+ Expert knowledge of Linux operating system administration

+ Able to write shell scripts in a variety of common scripting languages (BASH, Ruby, PERL, etc)

+ Must be adept at building relationships with all technical & operational areas across organizations

+ Willingness to work overtime and/or extended shifts, and on weekends with short notice

+ Able to work 24/7 to provide phone and in person support and travel occasionally for offsite upgrades and training and professional development opportunities

+ Strong analytical problem-solving skills

+ Expert knowledge of Linux operating systems & associated scripting (Shell)
