POSITION SUMMARY:
The Creative Services Writer/Producer is responsible for creatively promoting FOX23 News, as well as entertainment programming and community service efforts, for FOX23 and My41, while consistently reinforcing the stations’ brands. This includes generating ideas for individual spots or campaigns, writing copy, shooting and editing video, and applying graphics—taking a spot from initial concept to a ready-for-air product. This position works closely with the News Department to clearly communicate the viewer benefit of a story, a newscast, or other station initiative.
JOB DUTIES:
Daily News Promotion – 60%
  • Produce daily topical promos to drive the FOX23 viewing audience to watch the upcoming newscasts.
    • Attend editorial meetings to help with story selection and planning.
    • Work closely with reporters and producers to determine the compelling elements of a story, then write clear, concise, and accurate copy that encourages viewers to watch.
    • Work closely with photographers and/or the production department to shoot or gather video that supports the copy and attracts the attention of viewers.
    • Edit attractive, professional-looking promos with great attention to details like spelling, placement of video and graphics, and audio levels.
    • Meet all deadlines for delivery of finished promos to Master Control to ensure they are ready to air at their scheduled times.
  • Produce Proof of Performance (POP) promo spots to reinforce the station’s brand and consistently demonstrate to viewers the work we do to keep them informed.
    • Collect and organize the best examples of breaking news, severe weather, investigative reporting, community involvement, or other noteworthy on-air performance.
    • Use the collected video to produce POPs when deemed appropriate by the Creative Services Director or Promotions Manager.
Periodic News Promotion – 25%
  • Write and produce topical special report promos to drive viewing audience to special reports during ratings sweep periods.
    • Work closely with reporters throughout the development of stories to ensure both the story and the promo demonstrate a unique angle and stand out from daily general assignment reports.
    • Join reporters on-location as they shoot their packages to shoot creative teases, alternate angles of interviews, and any other useful video if Creative Services Director deems appropriate.
    • Work closely with the FOX23 graphic design team to develop special title animations or other supporting graphics.
    • Produce or monitor the production of a :30 promo for radio.
    • Meet all deadlines for submission of spots to Master Control and outside media if applicable, in order to achieve optimum promotional exposure in advance of the airing of each special report.
  • Write and produce promos that station sponsored events, program launches, talent changes, or other special initiatives to raise awareness with our viewing audience.
    • Work closely with the Creative Services Director and Promotions Manager to develop the promotional message and timeline, meeting all production deadlines.
    • Shoot video at events or collaborate with news photographers already shooting the events, and when deemed appropriate by the Creative Services director incorporate that video into POP spots.
Long-term Station Branding – 10%
  • May periodically be called on to develop creative ideas, write scripts, and produce spots for long-term image campaigns to reinforce the station’s brand and set us apart from the competition.
    • Work closely with the Creative Services Director to ensure that the concept and execution of each image campaign achieves the station’s overall branding goals.
    • Direct talent and supporting staff during promo shoots.
    • Work closely with the Promotions Manager to arrange for locations, additional talent, or props needed for the shoots.
Daily Quality Control and Organization – 5%
  • Meet with news producers in advance of newscasts to write and/or refine in-show teases.
  • Work with the other Creative Services Writer/Producer(s) to maintain a well-organized project file system and video archive.
  • Assist with community events, e.g. State Fair, Broken Arrow Rooster Days, etc.

Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Some study in a field such as Communications, Broadcasting, Journalism or Marketing preferred.
Experience:
  • A minimum of two years experience working full-time in television news promotion is required.
  • Experience with non-linear editing required, Adobe Creative Cloud experience preferred.
  • Experience in lighting and shooting video for broadcast is a plus.
  • Experience in directing talent and crew both in-studio and on location is a plus.
Additional Requirements:
  • Must be able to write clear, concise copy that accurately portrays a news story and persuades viewers to tune in.
  • Must be able to create attractive compositions of video and graphics that support the copy.
